Suva, Fiji – The Pacific-European Union (EU) Marine Partnership (PEUMP) programme has launched its new website today.
The website, which can be accessed here https://peump.dev/ contains extensive information on the programme’s activities in coastal fisheries, marine biodiversity, oceanic fisheries, education and capacity building and mainstreaming a gender and human rights-based approach in the fisheries sector.
The PEUMP programme is a regional initiative working in 15 Pacific countries, funded by the EU and the government of Sweden, supporting the sustainable management and development of fisheries for food security and economic growth in the Pacific.
The Pacific Community (SPC) is one of several implementing partners of the PEUMP programme. Speaking about the launch of the website, SPC’s Director General Dr Stuart Minchin said:
“SPC is pleased to be a key implementing partner of the PEUMP programme, which is doing essential work in the Pacific in promoting sustainable management and sound ocean governance practices. The launch of this website provides an invaluable platform for PEUMP to highlight its efforts throughout the region and to fully establish itself as a recognised resource for the many Pacific communities of practice focused on ocean management issues.”
The PEUMP programme is working to ensure that sex-disaggregated data is collected across the programme, promoting women in marine science and research, empowering more women to participate in coastal fisheries management decision-making and creating more equal and decent employment opportunities in the tuna industry. Gender and fisheries analysis is also being conducted to inform policy and programming, while highlighting women’s roles in food security along food supply chains.
Applying a gender, social inclusion lens and using a human rights-based approach is key for all PEUMP implementing agencies across their programming. The programme has been training partners to act sensitively, identify opportunities to tackle poverty reduction, ensure an inclusive and fair share of benefits that leave no one behind, while supporting countries on the ground to strengthen the social dimension of their work.
This is achieved through increased national gender and fisheries analysis, training at regional, national and communal levels, capacity building of key stakeholders, awareness activities, collection of sex-disaggregated data or targeted support of specific fisheries sectors that bear the potential of benefiting all for a prosperous and inclusive blue economy that puts people first.
The PEUMP programme is working in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Vanuatu.
Several key Pacific regional agencies are also part of the PEUMP programme, with targeted support being implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC), Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and University of the South Pacific (USP) working in close collaboration with national authorities and Non-Government Organisations such as the Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) Network, Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association (PITIA).
